Economy Class Syndrome

Leisure or business, we are flying more frequently.

What is economy class syndrome?

The creation of blood clots in veins within the legs. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) sets in provoking the risk of compromised blood circulation in the affected limb and precipitating the hazard of a clot breakout. Free clots can lodge, especially in the lungs, causing sudden death.

Blood clots occur during or just after a long airplane flight, especially in economy class. As the major airlines crumble up the seats there is less space allotted per passenger. Lack of leg room, immobilization.

Immobility increases blood pooling in the legs, blood flow decreases and stagnates.

Lower oxygen pressure and dehydration are other risk factors contributing to the syndrome. The air in the cabin is of almost 0% degree of humidity. Coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages (all of which are diuretics) further promote dehydration.

Four basic steps to prevent economy class syndrome:

  • Wear compression stockings
  • Keep your feet, legs moving
  • Avoid long periods of inactivity

Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your flight
